North East Healthy Communities to transition to North Eastern Public Health Unit on 30 June 2022

After more than 20 years of supporting partnerships for health and wellbeing across Victoria, the Secretary of the Department of Health has advised Primary Care Partnerships (PCPs) that funding and high value functions will transition to Local Public Health Units by 30 June 2022. For North East Healthy Communities, we will transition to the North Eastern Public Health Unit, based at Austin Health, and will be joined by Hume Whittlesea PCP, Inner East PCP and Outer East PCP.

This decision followed a review of the Primary Care Partnerships program by KPMG, which identified a compelling case for change following a much changed primary care landscape and a significant shift by PCPs in recent years to focus on health promotion and prevention.

This outcome is recognition of the high quality of work undertaken within North East Healthy Communities and PCPs across Victoria. It represents a great opportunity to be involved in shaping the future of public health with our local communities, including strengthening place-based health promotion, prevention and community engagement. The transition will consolidate resources, skills and knowledge across the new, bigger catchment area, and will offer consistent governance structures and authorising environments to influence system level change.

We are working closely with our colleagues at the North Eastern Public Health Unit to ensure a smooth transition, and expect that relationships with our partners will be retained and strengthened post- transition. There is a sense of excitement for the opportunities that this new chapter presents for better health and wellbeing  outcomes in our catchment.

North East Healthy Communities acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional custodians of the land we work on. We pay our respects to their Elders both past and present and acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first people of this nation.
